The story unfolds in a Tokyo district infested with criminality. Dominating the area is "The Eighth," or Unit 8, a specialized division of the 3rd Mobile Assault team headquartered in the 5th Special Public Security Section. Outfitted with cutting-edge Willwear exoskeletons, they confront the mounting threats of lawlessness. Their superiors assign the team a new assistant inspector named Asami Kazari, whose task is to keep tabs on their operations and provide constructive feedback. Her covert mission, however, entails converting the unruly and unscrupulous team into a disciplined and high-performing unit.
There was once a vampire named Vanitas, despised by his own kind because he was born under a full blue moon while most vampires arise on a crimson one. It is the 16th year of the Meiji era. Five years have passed since Kenshin Himura stopped the uprising of Makoto Shishio.
