In ancient Japan's Warring States era, a Samurai general named Daigo Kagemitsu makes a pact with 48 demons. In exchange for complete dominion over the country, he promises to give them his unborn child's limbs. Once the child is born, Daigo commands him to be disposed of in the river, thinking that he'll die. But a kind-hearted sage rescues the baby and gives him prosthetics. As the boy grows up and becomes Hyakkimaru, he gains control over the demons who took his limbs, ultimately allowing him to reclaim them. Along the way, he saves an adolescent pickpocket named Dororo from a group of thugs, and both embark on a journey to locate and defeat the demons. However, their path is rife with supernatural beings and apparitions.

Mahoujin Guruguru targets a mature young audience and incorporates sporadic blunt humor and subtle references that could potentially shock Western parents. It is a spoof of initial role-playing games, particularly the turn-based ones like Final Fantasy. The voiceover artist replaces character dialogue with a spoken narrative common in such games, which constitutes one of the comedic aspects of the show. Frequently, RPG-style information boxes are showcased on the screen, supplemented by narration in the established RPG format. Nike and Kukuri, the lead protagonists' ultimate aim, is to overthrow Giri, the leader of the dark forces.

Shotaro Isinomori, a renowned Japanese comic book artist, created and illustrated this comic. It was initially serialized in Nintendo Power Magazine, comprising 12 installments ranging from January 1992 (Volume 32) to December 1992, and later published as a book in 1993. Fleeing to the sanctuary of a nearby forest, the troop comes across a colossal, hairless, two-legged mouse, referred to as a "Bakenezumi," and allies themselves with the animal in their continued conflict against a formidable adversary.

The Japanese name Saiyukiden Daienoh has been attributed to Katsuya Terada's manga, "Legend of the Journey to the West: The Great Monkey King," which is based on the sixteenth century Chinese novel, Xi You Yi, from which Terada drew inspiration.
