Five short stories. - Inu wo Kau (Raising a Dog) - Soshite Neko wo Kau (And Then, Caring for a Cat) - Niwa no Nagame (View of the Backyard) - Sannin no Hibi (Three People's Days) - Yakusoku no Chi (Promised Land) The first one tells the death of an old dog, hence the title. The last one is a bit similar to a later work of the author, Kamigami no Itadaki. Inu wo Kau won the Shogakukan Manga Award (examination committee special) in 1992.
This book includes all the stories from Inu o Kau and Toudo no Tabibito, and two works never reprinted before, Hiken Zangetsu and Hyakunen no Keifu.

She meets Chimaki, who works at the local convenience store at the island, and they begin a curious relationship.
At a high school year opening assembly, Kaede is caught off guard when Nomiya, a transfer student who is younger than him, suddenly embraces him. Nomiya reminds Kaede of a summer they spent together as children and becomes determined to reconnect with him. However, Kaede is still struggling with the death of his brother, who may have taken his own life due to gender dissociative disorder, causing him to hesitate in getting too close to Nomiya. Despite his initial reluctance, the two eventually become close friends, and their relationship develops into something romantic.
Inuyashiki has a family, a wife and two kids, none of which care about him. When he learns that he has only three months to live he realizes that the only one who will miss him is his dog. Shortly after this realization he is killed in a crash landing by aliens. He is rebuilt by them as a machine with a human exterior. How will his life change now that he isn't human.
